Raleigh's big oaks are beautiful, but they make growing grass hard. Shade, root competition and a thick layer of leaves every fall all work against fescue. Overseeding each fall with a shade-tolerant blend, mowing high and clearing leaves regularly keep lawns going under the canopy.
Older Raleigh lawns are often compacted and worn, and aeration with fertilization brings them back. Where grass just will not grow, we can repair the area with soil prep and topsoil, or suggest a bed or ground cover instead.

Why will grass not grow under my oak trees?
Deep shade, root competition and leaf cover all stress grass. Shade-tolerant fescue helps, but in the darkest spots a bed, mulch or ground cover is often a better choice.
How often should leaves be removed?
During peak leaf drop, every week or two is best. A thick layer left for weeks can smother a fescue lawn.
